Merv Allen was one of the Founders of the ASRU and its second President. He was President of the NSW Combined High Schools and a great force in the strength of rugby in the government schools
He was very foresighted and saw the value of the UK tours that became a strong feature of schools rugby in Australia
His wife Iris was equally a strong supporter. Iris and Merv left $100,000 in their will to the ASRU.
This led directly to the establishment of the Schools Rugby Foundation which is still in existence today.
The Merv & Iris Allen Award is named in their joint honour.
