Australia’s representative teams at the SANIX World Youth Rugby Tournament Announced

AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLS’ RUGBY UNION

The Australian Schools Rugby Union ‘ASRU’ is pleased to announce the two schools teams selected to represent Australia in the prestigious SANIX World Youth Rugby Tournament to be held in Munakata City, Fukuoka, Japan 26 April – 6 May, 2023. They are:

  • Boys Competition: Downlands College, QLD
  • Girls Competition: Kings Christian College, QLD

“Being selected to represent Australia at the 2023 Championships is a terrific honor for Downlands, the players, and the Toowoomba Community,” said Jorden Smith, Director of Sport, Downlands College. ‘The players are extremely excited to represent their country and school community on the world stage. For our students, this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience to come up against some of the best schools and players from different countries.”

The countries that participate are invited directly by the Japanese Rugby Union, with each country then selecting the school to participate. The ASRU has been responsible for selecting the boy’s and the girl’s schools, following a Request for Nominations posted on the ASRU website on 30 October 2022 (https://schoolsrugby.com.au/sanix-2023/).

The boys will compete in a 15-a-side tournament, with the girls in a 7-a-side tournament.

The boy’s competition is four pools of four played over six days, as teams only play one match each day. There will be 8 Japanese high schools participating representing the best in Japan. Each pool will have two Japanese teams and two foreign teams.

The girl’s tournament is two pools of four, with four Japanese teams and four foreign teams. Competition is played over two days. Each pool will have two Japanese teams and two foreign teams. All pool games are played in one day. The next day all the play off matches are played.

“The SANIX World Youth Rugby Tournament is perhaps the most prestigious schools rugby tournament in the world,” said Mr Kevin Culliver, President of the ASRU. “It is a powerful honour to be selected.”

“It is an extraordinary experience for the young players, playing high level matches against teams from around the world. They share amazing cultural and sporting experiences on and off the field.”

“We know that the boys representing Downlands College and girls representing Kings Christian College will do Australian rugby proud,” Mr Culliver said.
